Island Parent Magazine Feature: Toddlers and Play
We’re delighted to be featured in Island Parent Magazine this month, exploring a topic every parent of young children can relate to, the chaos, curiosity, and constant surprises of life with a toddler.
When your little one melts down over the wrong colour cup or refuses to get dressed, have you ever wondered, “What am I supposed to do right now?” In our Island Parent article, Lost the Toddler Instruction Manual? Play Is the Tool You Really Need, we talk about how simple moments of play can turn power struggles into connection.
Our article on toddlers is featured on the cover of Island Partent Magazine.
Why Play Works
Play is far more than fun. It’s how toddlers communicate, learn, and process big feelings. Research shows that play lowers stress, builds emotional connection, and encourages cooperation. When parents turn daily routines into moments of play (a race to get shoes on, a silly toothbrushing song, or pretending the laundry basket is a rocket ship) they shift the dynamic from control to connection.
Making Play Practical
You don’t need to be endlessly creative or energetic to use play as a parenting tool. Small, genuine moments matter most:
Turn routines into quick games or pretend adventures.
Let your child take the lead for a few minutes to feel empowered.
Use humour to lighten tension; a funny voice or exaggerated mistake goes a long way.
Remember: playful doesn’t mean permissive. You can be both silly and firm.
Even 30 seconds of shared laughter can change the mood, ease resistance, and remind your child that you’re on the same team.
Parenting Without a Manual
Parenting toddlers will always have its messy, unpredictable moments — but you don’t need a manual. When you lean into play, you’re using one of the most natural and effective ways to connect, teach, and calm your child.
