What is Family Counselling?
Family counselling is a form of therapy that brings parents, children, and other relatives into the same conversation. Guided by a trained counsellor, family members explore patterns of communication, address conflicts, and learn practical skills to support one another.
Sessions may involve the whole family or smaller groupings, whatever best serves the goals at hand. By creating a safe, neutral space, family counselling helps everyone share their perspectives, build empathy, and develop strategies for handling challenges together. Whether you’re facing a major life transition, struggling with day-to-day tension, or simply want to strengthen your family bonds, this collaborative approach equips each person with tools to foster healthier, more supportive relationships.
Our Team Approach to Family Counselling
At Harbour Family Counselling, we take a collaborative approach to supporting families. Some families benefit from working with just one counsellor. Others may benefit from a team model, where each member of the family including parents, children, or teens, receives targeted support from a dedicated professional.
If you’re interested in building a team around your family’s needs, we recommend starting with a consultation call with Darcy Harbour, who leads our family counselling program.
Meet the Team
-
Darcy Harbour B.Ed, MA, RCC
Team Lead, Family Counsellor
Darcy supports parents and families through guidance, structure, and a team-based approach. She leads group sessions and works closely with Maria and Talita to ensure each family member gets the support they need.
-
Maria Butler BA, B.Ed, MA, RCC
Child and Youth Counsellor (children and teens)
Maria works primarily with younger children and teens, offering play-based and creative approaches that help kids express themselves and work through emotional challenges. She also works independently with families who don’t require a full team model.
-
Talita Nell B.Sc, MA, RCC
Child and Youth Counsellor (children and teens)
Talita specializes in supporting preteens and teens as they navigate emotional and behavioural changes, life transitions, and identity challenges. She also offers individual family counselling for those who want to work with her directly.
Family therapy helps parents, siblings, kids, and relatives work through challenges, communicate better, and strengthen their relationships in a supportive, judgment-free space.
-
Improve Communication
Miscommunication, lack of communication, or frequent misunderstandings can cause conflicts or distance within a family. Counselling provides tools to help family members express themselves more clearly and listen actively.
So you can…
…feel heard and understood, resulting in reduced misunderstandings, greater emotional closeness, and more constructive conversations.
-
Resolve Conflict
Many families seek help to navigate recurring disagreements, power struggles, or conflicts between parents and children or among siblings. Counselling offers strategies to manage and resolve disputes constructively.
So you can…
…resolve disputes collaboratively, experience less tension, and develop skills to address future conflicts effectively.
-
Navigate Emotional and Behavioural Changes
When a family member is dealing with emotional issues such as anxiety, depression, or behavioral challenges, these issues often impact the entire family dynamic. Counselling can provide support and tools for managing these difficulties.
So you can…
…reduce emotional outbursts or challenging behaviours, improve family understanding of emotional needs, and experience greater emotional stability.
-
Handle Life Transitions or Stressful Events
Families often experience stress during major life changes, such as divorce, remarriage, moving, loss of a loved one, or financial hardships. Counseling helps families adapt to these changes and maintain stability.
So you can…
…feel equipped to adapt to change, maintain a sense of unity, and regain emotional balance during transitions.
-
Strengthen Family Bonds
Some families seek counselling not because of a crisis but to enhance their relationships, improve teamwork, and build a stronger sense of connection and trust.
So you can…
…feel more connected, appreciated, and emotionally secure, building a supportive and loving home environment.
-
Set Healthy Boundaries
Families often seek counselling to establish and maintain healthy boundaries, whether between parents and children, among siblings, or with extended family members. Learning how to respect each other’s needs while maintaining connection can create a more balanced and supportive family dynamic.
So you can…
…create a family dynamic where each member feels respected, heard, and supported
