What is Mindfulness in Therapy?
Mindfulness in therapy is about learning to notice what’s happening inside and around you with calm, curious attention. It’s not about emptying your mind or doing it “right.” It’s about slowing down just enough to notice your thoughts, emotions, and sensations—without getting swept away by them.
Mindfulness can help you feel more present, more grounded, and more able to respond instead of react. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, overwhelm, or just trying to make space for yourself, mindfulness offers a gentle path forward.
Why So Many People Are Turning to Mindfulness
Mindfulness has become a go-to tool for stress relief, but it offers much more than that. When woven into therapy, mindfulness helps you build emotional awareness, shift out of autopilot, and develop a deeper connection with yourself.
It’s especially helpful if you feel stuck in cycles of overthinking, anxiety, or emotional reactivity. Students and professionals alike tell us they feel more resilient and clear-headed when they start incorporating mindfulness into their day-to-day lives.
You don’t need to be “zen” to begin. You just need a bit of space and the willingness to check in with yourself.
How Mindfulness Can Help
You might find mindfulness-based therapy helpful if you're:
Struggling with anxiety or racing thoughts
Feeling disconnected, scattered, or overwhelmed
Reacting quickly in ways you later regret
Wanting to manage stress during exams or life transitions
Looking for a steady sense of calm and self-connection
Mindfulness offers a way to slow the pace and tune in, so you can respond with more intention and less pressure.
How Mindfulness Fits into Our Counselling Approach in Victoria
At Harbour Family Counselling, we don’t teach mindfulness as a rigid program. Instead, we offer mindfulness tools as part of a flexible, person-centered approach that meets you where you are.
You might blend mindfulness with other approaches like CBT, IFS, or emotion-focused therapy. It can be as simple as breathing with intention, noticing sensations in your body, or learning how to pause and reflect when things feel intense.
Our counsellors are gentle, thoughtful, and skilled at helping clients bring more presence and steadiness into their lives.

What Sessions Look Like
In a mindfulness-based therapy session, your counsellor may guide you through a short check-in or breathing exercise, help you tune into your body’s cues, or gently explore the thoughts and emotions that are most present.
You’ll build skills for managing stress, increasing self-awareness, and finding more ease in your day. Every session is shaped around your comfort, needs, and pace.
Sessions are 50 minutes, and available in person near UVic and Camosun or online throughout British Columbia.
Fees and Insurance
Our sessions range from $155 to $170, depending on the counsellor you choose. We provide receipts for reimbursement through your student plan (UVSS, Camosun) or workplace and extended health benefits. If you’re not sure what your plan covers, we’re happy to help you check.
