Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
A structured, trauma-informed approach that may help people process distressing experiences at a pace that feels manageable.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured psychotherapy approach used to help people work with memories and experiences that remain distressing. During EMDR, a person briefly brings an aspect of an experience to mind while following a set of guided bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, alternating sounds, or tapping.
EMDR follows a phased process. Counselling begins with understanding your history and goals, and building preparation and coping resources. Memory processing is considered only when you and your counsellor agree that it is appropriate. EMDR is more than eye movements; the work is planned and paced around the person.
How may EMDR support counselling?
When it is a suitable approach, EMDR may be used to explore:
Distressing memories that continue to affect day-to-day life
Triggers, images, beliefs, or body responses connected to difficult experiences
Experiences that contribute to feeling stuck, on edge, or disconnected
Ways of relating to past experiences that a person would like to understand differently
People respond in different ways, and EMDR is not the right fit for everyone. Your counsellor can discuss options and adapt the approach to your needs and readiness.
What might EMDR look like in counselling?
Early sessions focus on your story, what you hope to work toward, and whether EMDR feels appropriate. You and your counsellor may practise grounding or other ways to manage distress before deciding together whether to process a particular memory. If you choose to proceed, your counsellor guides the process and checks in with you as it unfolds. You can ask to pause or adjust the pace.
EMDR does not require you to share every detail of an experience aloud. Your counsellor will explain what to expect and collaborate with you about what feels manageable. Availability depends on a counsellor’s training and whether EMDR is a good fit for your situation.
