About Harbour Family Counselling
A place where families can find steadier ground
Every family goes through difficult seasons.
Parenting can feel overwhelming. Communication can break down. Stress, anxiety, and conflict can slowly make home life feel chaotic or disconnected.
At Harbour Family Counselling, we believe families work best when everyone has the support they need. Our goal is to help families strengthen relationships, build emotional resilience, and create a more grounded and connected home life.
The practice was founded by Darcy Harbour, whose journey into counselling began long before she opened a private practice.
The Story Behind Harbour Family Counselling
Darcy Harbour began her career as a teacher.
She spent three years teaching in Japan before returning to Canada to work as both an elementary school teacher and a high school teacher. During those years in the classroom, she saw firsthand how children’s emotional lives were deeply connected to what was happening at home.
This experience sparked a growing interest in counselling and supporting families more directly.
After completing her Master’s in Counselling, Darcy worked as a counsellor at a Montessori school so she could be at the same school as her daughter. Supporting students and families in that environment gave her a unique window into the everyday challenges parents and children face.
Over time, she moved into private practice, where she spent more than a decade supporting individuals, parents, and families.
Again and again, one pattern stood out.
Many parents were struggling not because they didn’t care deeply about their children — but because they simply didn’t have effective tools. Often they found themselves relying on the same parenting approaches that had been used on them growing up, even when those approaches weren’t producing the results they hoped for.
What Darcy discovered was that even small shifts in perspective could create remarkable change within families.
A New Way to Support Families
As her work expanded, Darcy began to see something important.
Families are systems.
When one part of the system changes, everything else shifts as well. Supporting one individual can help, but real transformation often happens when the whole family system is supported together.
This insight led to the creation of Harbour Family Counselling’s collaborative team model.
Instead of approaching family challenges from a single point of entry, the practice brings together counsellors with different specialties who can support each member of the family in ways that are tailored to their needs.
A Collaborative Team Approach
Every family is unique. That’s why each member of the family may benefit from different types of support.
At Harbour Family Counselling, families may work with several counsellors as part of a coordinated care plan.
For example:
A child or teen may work with a counsellor who specializes in youth development and emotional regulation
Parents may each work with their own counsellor to develop skills and process their experiences
A couples counsellor may support the relationship between partners
A family counsellor may guide sessions that bring everyone together
In some cases, even extended family members, such as grandparents, may receive support as relationships are rebuilt
These counsellors collaborate behind the scenes under the guidance of a lead family counsellor, creating a coordinated plan that supports the entire family system.
Each person receives bespoke care, while the whole family moves forward together.
This model allows families to make progress faster and more sustainably than traditional one-person counselling approaches.
The team approach to family counselling is a unique offering in Victoria, and it reflects our belief that strong families are built through thoughtful support at multiple levels.
Our Vision
Harbour Family Counselling exists to help families move from chaos and disconnection toward greater calm, understanding, and resilience.
When families are supported well:
children feel safer and more confident
parents feel more capable and less overwhelmed
relationships grow stronger
homes become more stable and connected
Sometimes the changes that create these shifts are surprisingly small — but when they happen in the right places, they can transform the entire family system.
