About Harbour Family Counselling

We believe in helping your whole family to thrive .

A place where families can find steadier ground

Harbour Family Counselling helps the whole family move from chaos and disconnection toward greater calm, understanding, and resilience.

When families are supported well:

  • children feel safer and more confident

  • parents feel more capable and less overwhelmed

  • elderly parents and their children heal old wounds

  • relationships grow stronger as communication improves

  • homes become more stable and connected

Sometimes the changes that create these shifts are surprisingly small, but when they happen in the right places, they can transform the entire family system.

At Harbour Family Counselling, we believe families work best when everyone has the support they need. Our goal is to help families strengthen relationships, build emotional resilience, and create a more grounded and connected home life.

Counselling as a Relationship

We all need great relationships.

We believe that at the core of therapy is the relationship you form with your counsellor. That relationship starts with the therapist you choose. At Harbour Family Counselling, you have the freedom to choose the therapist who feels right for you from a thoughtfully curated team selected for their expertise, warmth, care, and approach. From the moment you connect with us, we focus on helping you feel comfortable, welcomed, and at ease, and we will be there for you through life’s ups and downs.

A New Way to Support Families

Families work as a system.

When one part of the system changes, everything else shifts as well. Meaningful change can begin with one person, but lasting growth often happens when the family is supported as a whole.

We meet families where they are, while also recognizing that each person brings their own experience and needs. By supporting both the individual and the family system together, we help create deeper understanding, stronger connections, and more sustainable change.

A Collaborative Team Approach

Every family is unique. That’s why each member of the family may benefit from different types of support.

At Harbour Family Counselling, we offer a very unique bespoke approach to family counselling. Rather than viewing each of our counsellors as separate and siloed professionals, we use a collaborative approach where families may work with several counsellors as part of a coordinated care plan.

For example:

  • Children or Teens may work with a counsellor who specializes in youth development and emotional regulation

  • Parents may each work with their own counsellor to develop skills and process their experiences

  • Couples may find support in growing their relationship or navigating divorce with a dedicated Couples Counsellor

  • Men can be paired with a counsellor who specializes in men’s issues and help them form deeper bonds with their partners and children

  • Whole Families or parts of families can come together under the guidance of a professional Family Counsellor

Our counsellors collaborate behind the scenes creating a coordinated plan that supports the entire family system.

Each person receives bespoke care, while the whole family moves forward together.

This model allows families to make progress faster and more sustainably than traditional one-person counselling approaches.

The team approach to family counselling is a unique offering in Victoria, and it reflects our belief that strong families are built through thoughtful support at multiple levels.

Guided Programs for Meaningful Change

In addition to counselling, we offer structured programs designed to support lasting growth. Mood Managers helps children better understand and regulate their emotions, while Chaos to Calm supports parents in creating more connected, cooperative family dynamics.

These programs are designed to fit naturally alongside our counselling services, offering practical support in a more structured way. They can be used on their own or as part of ongoing therapy, helping families build skills, strengthen relationships, and create positive changes at home.

Story Behind Harbour Family Counselling

The practice was founded by Darcy Harbour and her journey into counselling began as a teacher.

She spent three years teaching in Japan before returning to Canada to work as both an elementary and middle school teacher. During those years in the classroom, she saw firsthand how children’s emotional lives were deeply connected to what was happening at home.

This experience sparked a growing interest in counselling and supporting families more directly.

After completing her Master’s in Counselling, Darcy worked as a school counsellor at various private schools. Supporting students and families in that environment gave her a unique window into the everyday challenges parents and children face.

Over time, she moved into private practice, where she has spent more than a decade supporting individuals, parents, and families.

Again and again, one pattern stood out.

Many parents were struggling because they simply didn’t have effective tools. She found parents would rely on the same approaches that had been used on them growing up, even when those approaches weren’t producing the results they hoped for.

What Darcy discovered was that even small shifts in perspective could create remarkable change within families.
