Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

A relationship-focused approach to understanding the emotions and patterns that shape family connection.

What is EFFT?

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) helps family members make sense of the emotions and relationship patterns beneath moments of conflict, distance, or disconnection. Drawing on attachment theory, EFFT supports family members in exploring what happens between them and finding new ways to express needs, respond to one another, and build a greater sense of emotional safety and connection.

How can EFFT support families?

In counselling, family members may work together to:

  • Notice recurring patterns that can leave people feeling unheard or alone

  • Understand the feelings and needs that may be beneath reactions or conflict

  • Share experiences in ways that invite listening and understanding

  • Explore new ways of responding to one another and repairing moments of disconnection

  • Strengthen connection while making room for each person’s perspective

These are possibilities to explore together, rather than outcomes that can be promised. The work is shaped around each family’s needs, readiness, and goals.

What might EFFT look like in counselling?

The counsellor helps slow down difficult interactions and supports each person in noticing and expressing what is happening for them. Together, family members can begin to understand the cycle they get caught in and practise responding with greater openness and care. The pace and structure are adapted to the people attending and the concerns they bring.

Family counselling at Harbour Family Counselling can include different configurations of a family. Who attends may vary over time, with everyone’s consent. EFFT principles may inform the work when they are a good fit for the family and the counsellor.
