What to Expect at Your First Counselling Session

A warm, minimalist illustration of a client and counsellor sitting in a calm office, talking with open body language. The setting is simple and modern with soft colors, reflecting supportive counselling and therapy in Canada.

Your first counselling session at Harbour Family Counselling is a calm, supportive conversation focused on you. There’s no need to prepare. Just come as you are. You’ll explore your goals and challenges at your own pace, sharing only what feels comfortable, with the option to meet in-person or virtually.

Choosing the Right Counsellor for You

You do not have to figure it out on your own. Our team includes counsellors with different specialties, whether you are looking for support for children, teens, couples, or adults. If you are unsure who might be the best fit, you can book a free consultation call. This helps you connect with a counsellor who understands your needs and can guide you to the right person or team.

Booking Your First Session

All new clients begin with a free consultation call to make sure it feels like a good match. After this initial call, you can book a full session through our online booking system. You can either select a counsellor ahead of time or start with the consultation and decide afterward.

What Happens in Your First Session

Your first session is a calm conversation focused on you. There is no need to prepare anything in advance. Simply showing up and being yourself is enough. If it helps, you are welcome to jot down a few thoughts or questions ahead of time, but it is completely optional.

How to Make the Most of Your First Visit

Being open and honest, even if it feels a little uncomfortable, helps you get the most out of counselling. Some clients like to take notes to remember key insights, while others prefer to reflect quietly afterward. Your counsellor may share ideas, tools, or exercises to try between sessions so you can continue to grow outside of the counselling room.

Types of Questions You Might Be Asked

Your counsellor may ask questions to help you explore your experiences, such as:

  • “What has been feeling heavy or difficult lately?”

  • “What do you hope will change through counselling?”

  • “How have you been coping with stress or conflict?”

These questions are designed to encourage reflection and help you move at a pace that feels comfortable.

Feeling Awkward Is Normal

It is completely normal to feel uneasy at first. Your counsellor understands this and will go at your pace. You never have to share more than you are ready to, and your comfort will always be a priority.

In-Person or Virtual Sessions

You can choose between in-person or virtual sessions, whichever feels right for you. If your needs or circumstances change, you can always switch formats.

Ready to Get Started?

Your first counselling session is about creating a safe and supportive space where you can begin to explore your story. When you are ready, book a free consultation call and we will help you find the counsellor who is the best fit for you.
